A couple months have passed and much grease has been washed off of my hands. We are progressing steadily toward our goal of finishing the build of the car but have hit a couple stumbling blocks along the way. We are in the process of finding another motor, as the one I purchased to put in the car does not appear to be the best choice. We also will need to purchase a different fuel cell; the current one does not meet the requirements. After the holidays, I plan on putting my nose to the grindstone, and with some help from the rest of the team, get this project on the road.
We’ve got some exciting news! A new (to us) car has been purchased and is soon to undergo fabrication. The new addition to the stable is a 1977 Mazda RX-3. The car has been competing in motorsports since 1980 and was most recently raced way back in 1996. After sitting around for quite a few years gathering a lot of dust (and serving as a home for a couple of squirrels), I purchased the car as a project. Here are some > pictures < of what we have to work with.
We hope to complete the build in time for the start of the 2011 racing season, and we sure have our work cut out for us. We'll need to completely redo almost every aspect of the car -- motor and transmission; safety equipment; paint and bodywork; fuel system. Pretty much everything needs to be replaced except the car itself. Well, I had better stop typing and start turning wrenches.
